Five Buena Vista University and the Student Activities Board traveled to the NACA National Convention in held in Charlotte, NC on February 25-29. This convention was an opportunity for learning and interaction that complements the classroom experience. At this national program, students from many states shared resources and exchanged ideas.
These students attended educational sessions addressing such topics as motivation, stress management, communication skills, decision making, ethical leadership and group processing techniques. Katy Rubino, a third year digital media major was selected to present an educational session at this convention. Her presentation entitled Gleeadership engaged participants in a self-evaluation of their leadership style while examining styles most closely in line with that of their favorite character from the hit TV show Glee.
Here’s what a few students learned from the conference.
“A lot of the sessions I attended had to deal with leadership and how to help your group succeed. I got a lot of ideas that can help members feel that they have ownership within SAB and that they feel valued as a member ” -Ashley Rogers, SAB President
“The conference made me a better leader because it helped me recognize some of my flaws. It was a great experience for me to talk to others and lead them but to also practice listening to others as well.” -Bre Carstes, VP of Entertainment Assistant
